Swordfish Along our Gulf Coast

Most anglers aren’t aware that swordfish are a developing fishery along our Gulf Coast. As their population has increased, so have the number of fishing tournaments specific to this species. Swordfish are best caught on circle hooks, since they have a soft mouth, and most commonly bite in the evening hours.  They like to bite on large squid illuminated with a light stick. This is a very acrobatic fish when hooked and they like to jump. They can be found in 1,200 to 1,800 water depths. The record swordfish was caught just this year, July 29, off the coast of Texas in 1,400 feet of water and weighed 412 pounds! Regardless of the size, they are delicious to eat!
